Director | Shakespeare in Love | Great River Shakespeare Festival

“The play is dynamically staged with constant movement, exciting fight scenes, and nary a dull moment, even scene changes are accomplished fluidly without pause. A rotating mini stage allows for quick transitions between locations, many of which are onstage at the theater, with clever use of hinted at action behind the curtain. This is the only play I saw in which the entire 16-person company appears, and they’re a fantastic ensemble”

“Doug Scholz-Carlson, Great River Shakespeare Festival’s artistic director, directs Shakespeare in Love with the sure and steady hand of a conductor whose orchestra is performing a great waltz, keeping the romance of the piece frothy and fun. The play has a large cast, utilizing the entire acting company of Great River Shakespeare Festival, and Scholz-Carlson manages to give each actor the opportunity to have their character shine, without breaking the consistent momentum and comic energy of the whole. The world play and physical comedy are both drawn out adroitly, and Scholz-Carlson’s talent as a fight choreographer is also an asset when swords are drawn.

Scholz-Carlson and his company of actors, brimming with talent and enthusiasm, make this a joyful time at the theater.”
Arthur Dorman, Talkin Broadway

“Director Doug Scholz-Carlson and choreographer Brenna Mosser do an amazing job with a spare but evocative set (by R. Eric Stone), keeping the cast in constant motion, which created an incredibly energetic and dynamic production. It was particularly compelling to watch the themes of love and intimacy on- and off-stage play out after hearing Tonia Sina discuss intimacy direction.”
